In 2013 I had the opportunity to interview Benjamin Wong of Von Wong photography. He was popular then (25K facebook likes) but now he's gone viral (125K likes). He shared his visions about Social media. There was some recording issues, so the interview never went public but for the first time I'm sharing some of his wisdom.
-Social Media Presence
-Modify online persona to match changing short term goals.
-Performing in the moment, peeks are when you don't think too much.
-Enjoy the craving. To continually reach for more.
-Numbers don't necessarily mean anything… eventually you realize they are just numbers - -Leveraged Facebook following
- Facebook/Social Media it IS the real world now.
Tips and Tricks on leveraging social media
-Figure out what you want to tell people. Tips, inspiration, links, share the journey.
-Overall portal into my world, some personal some professional.
-Keep it light and keep the desire to have a voice and engage people
-If you open yourself to others, you slowly grow and you feed yourself.
If you give something out to people then it all comes back.
So many shoots start with, "So I sent or got this random email..."
-Reach out to people with sincerity, start engaging them and THEN something is bound to happen.
-Doesn't have a specific desire or purpose to email sometimes.
-Not so goal minded, don't reach out with something in mind you want… just engage.
-Receive about 50 emails a day, how do you keep up?
-Be persistent, the people that are regularly commenting are lodging themselves in the mind.
-At the end of the day it's just people, just find the right person to hit up.
-If something hits me, just do it.
-Minimum effort maximum result kind of guy… don't pursue things too much, don't be the underdog reaching in three different ways. Keep a relative position of power.
-Come from a position of leverage .
-Chance happenings come from putting enough lines out there and the right things will happen.
"Knowing why you wake up in the morning is worth more than any paycheck." -VW
"I wake up because I can make a difference to others. To challenge myself, to create things that haven't been done before. I wake up to see the adventures." -VW
"If you find that calling, something that you love, if you don't do that, if you don't follow up with that then everything else becomes very meaningless."
"If you know yourself and you know your enemy you don't need to fear the outcome of a thousand battles." I knew myself, I knew my capabilities and there was a support network with family and a backup plan with an engineering degree.
"If you don't give yourself the option to fail I don't think it really happens… anybody can do anything."
"I'm more scared of myself losing interest or changing my mind…"
"Most people find the journey more interesting than the lighting or logistics of the shoot, to show people that you can do anything."
